Stockholm Open: Monfils makes 34th career final with win over Djere
Gael Monfils beat Laslo Djere 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday evening and will face Russian qualifier Pavel Kotov in the final
Frenchman Gael Monfils defeated Serb Laslo Djere 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the final of the Stockholm Open at the Kungliga Tennishallen on Saturday evening.
The world No 140 played solid tennis across the span of the one hour, 15 minute match, making only three unforced errors compared to Djere’s 15. Monfils was also strong behind his serve, making 64 percent of first serves and winning the point 83 percent of the time.
By making the Stockholm Open final, the 37-year-old will now contest his 34th ATP Tour final, having won 11 titles across his career. This run comes off the back of some strong form late in 2023, where Monfils has made deep runs in Washington, Toronto and Cincinnati.
Monfils, ranked No 140, will face Russian qualifier Pavel Kotov next.
Ahead of his victory, the 37-year-old Frenchman won against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (2-6, 6-2, 7-5), Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic (6-4, 6-3) and second seed Adrian Mannarino (7-5, 7-6 (3)).
Djere, ranked No 35, beat Swede wildcard Leo Borg (6-3, 6-3), American J.J. Wolf (7-5, 6-4) and lucky loser Tomas Machac (5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
