Stockholm Open: Djere outlasts Machac in marathon quarter-final

Laslo Djere edged out Tomas Machac 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 on Friday evening. He’ll play Gael Monfils in the next round

Serb Laslo Djere reached the semi-finals of the Stockholm Open by edging out lucky loser Tomas Machac 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at the Kungliga Tennishallen on Friday evening.

The match, which lasted well over three hours, saw Djere claw his way back into contention after dropping the opening set. The Serbian won a second set tiebreak, then proved clutch breaking serve in the deciding set to win 6-4. Djere dominated the play for large stretches of the encounter, striking 36 winners and 28 unforced errors.

Djere, ranked No 35, will face Gael Monfils next, who gritted out a tough straight sets win over Adrian Mannarino earlier in the day.

The Serb won against Swede wildcard Leo Borg (6-3, 6-3) and American J.J. Wolf (7-5, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.

In the previous round of the Stockholm tournament, Machac, ranked No 81, beat Swiss Stan Wawrinka (6-4, 6-1).
