Cressy overcomes Ivashka to set up Stockholm showdown with top seed Tsitsipas
Maxime Cressy takes a 0-1 record against top seed Tsitsipas into their second round clash in Stockholm
American Maxime Cressy needed three sets and over two-and-a-half hours to beat Belarus’ Ilya Ivashka and reach the second round of the Stockholm Open at the Kungliga Tennishallen on Monday afternoon.
In a match with just one break of each player’s serve, Cressy, ranked No 33 in the world, won 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to set up a second round clash with top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas next.
The big-serving Cressy hit 22 aces in the match, but also double faulted 11 times on the way to the win.
Tsitsipas leads Cressy 1-0 in career head-to-head
Tsitsipas has defeated Cressy in their only previous encounter on the pro tour. The Greek beat the serve-and-volleying American 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the 2020 US Open.
The Greek, who has already secured his spot in the season-ending ATP Finals, has a first in the first round of the ATP 250 event.
