“Small boys want to become police officers or firemen. He wanted to be Roger Federer, fair enough.”
We spoke to Aneke Rune, in our ‘Raising a Champion’ series in which she talks about her son Holger Rune’s dream of being a great tennis player and how she has worked to continue supporting him through the years. These words open this episode, a very insightful video we recommend to any one wanting know more about Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ current opponent.
“It’s difficult to be the only one in Denmark with that big dream, she added. And no one around him understands what is going on. So, he’s a freak in Denmark. He’s not like the others. He doesn’t want to be like the others. When we have been home for a week, he’s like: ‘When do we leave? Now I’ve been enough in Denmark. I want to go back to where I belong.’He sees himself in the tennis world. He likes being in an environment where there are people like him. And being in London or being at the Mouratoglou Academy then, he’s not a freak anymore. Then, he’s one of the guys.“
Holger Rune is already ranked in the top 40 in the world and recently won his first ATP singles title. He won his first Grand Slam main draw match at Roland-Garros this year and is now through to the fourth round.
