Shapovalov storms past Machac to make Dallas semi-finals
Denis Shapovalov defeated Tomas Machac in straight sets on Saturday. Shapovalov secured a spot alongside Tommy Paul in the semi-finals.
Denis Shapovalov beat No 6 seed Tomas Machac 7-6 (5), 6-0 to move into the semi-finals of the Dallas Open at the Ford Center at The Star on Saturday night.
Shapovalov trailed 4-2 in the first set and 3-0 in the tiebreak. However, the left-hander managed to battle back from both of those deficits. Once he stole the opening set from Machac, Shapovalov was off to the races. The world No 54 did not lose a single game in the second set while cruising to victory in one hour and 14 minutes.
“I’m beating some really tough opponents,” Shapovalov noted. “It’s been a tough draw, but I’m really happy and excited with the way I’m playing.”
The Canadian will play No 3 seed Tommy Paul on semi-final Saturday. He previously defeated Serb Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 and top-seeded American Taylor Fritz 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) ahead of Friday’s victory.
In the previous rounds of the Dallas tournament, Machac — ranked No 25 — defeated Japanese veteran Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-2 and Australia’s Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 7-6 (0).
