Shapovalov loses third match in a row with loss at Stuttgart Open
Oscar Otte upsets fourth seed Denis Shapovalov 7-6 [6], 7-6 [4] to advance to the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart
Canada’s Denis Shapovalov was knocked out in his opening match at the ATP Stuttgart Open at Tennis Club Weissenhof on Thursday.
The 23-year-old left-hander was defeated in two tie-breaks 7-6 [6], 7-6 [4] by Germany’s Oscar Otte, ranked No 61, in second round action after he received a first round bye.
This was the fourth consecutive loss on tour for Shapovalov after he also lost his opening matches in Geneva and at the French Open (and the quarter-finals at Rome).
Otte, who beat Daniel Altmaier (7-6 [2], 7-6 [4]) in the previous round, is through to the quarter-finals and will next meet Frenchman Bejamin Bonzi.
