German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, edged out Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-6 (5) to advance to the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Tuesday.

He had a run-in towards the end of the first set with umpire Mohamed Lahyani, who correctly called a double bounce, which Zverev was adamant had bounced only once. As he continued his complaints, he was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the deciding set Griekspoor saved seven match points, and looked set to save the eighth but missed a volley at the net to hand victory to his opponent.

Zverev, ranked No 3, will play Belgian David Goffin next.

The German beat Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci (6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Griekspoor, ranked No 40, won against Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3) and Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 26 seed (6-3, 6-2).
