Rejuvenated Schwartzman upsets Fritz in Shanghai for first top 10 win in 2023
Diego Schwartzman edged out Taylor Fritz 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) on Monday night and will play the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Sonego and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 22 seed, in the next round
Argentinian wildcard Diego Schwartzman reached the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters by edging out American Taylor Fritz, the No 7 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at the Qi Zhong Stadium on Monday night.
The former top 10 player came from 5-3 down in the decider to clinch his best win, by ranking, this year, and his first top 10 win since 2022.
Schwartzman, ranked No 130, will face the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Sonego and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 22 seed, next.
The Argentinian beat Frenchman Luca Van Assche (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) and No 27 seed Jiri Lehecka (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Shanghai tournament, Fritz, ranked No 8, edged out Japanese Yosuke Watanuki (7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 6-4).
