Shanghai Masters: Hurkacz books spot in semi-finals for second Masters event in a row
The Pole will face the winner of the match between No 19 seed Ben Shelton and No 26 seed Sebastian Korda for a palce in the final
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the No 16 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters by beating Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the Qi Zhong Stadium on Thursday.
Hurkacz, ranked No 17 in the world, will play the winner of the match between No 19 seed Ben Shelton and No 26 seed Sebastian Korda next.
The Pole had also reached the semis of the Cincinnati Masters – marking the first time in his career he has reached back-to-back semis at the ATP Masters level. It is also the sixth ATP Masters semi-final of Hurkacz’s career (from 11 ATP Masters quarter-finals) and his 25th win on hardcourts in 2023.
The Pole won against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (7-6 (5), 6-4), qualifier Yu Hsiou Hsu (6-4, 6-4) and Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (4)) earlier in the week.
In the previous rounds of the Shanghai tournament, Marozsan, ranked No 91, defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (7-6 (6), 6-2), Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 11 seed (6-3, 7-5), Serb Dusan Lajovic (6-3, 6-3) and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed (7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4).
