Alcaraz extends win streak to 11 with victory over Wu in Shanghai
The Spaniard picked up his 50th win of 2024 and has now won 100 matches on hard courts in his career
Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the No 3 seed, extended his winning streak to 11 matches as he beat Wu Yibing of China Wu 7-6 (5), 6-3 in an entertaining third-round battle at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Alcaraz, ranked No 2 and the champion last week in Beijing, will face the winner of the match between Gael Monfils and No 16 seed Ugo Humbert in the last 16. It was his 50th win of 2024 and the 100th hard court win of his career.
“He is still recovering from injury so his level is definitely (that of) a top player,” Alcaraz said of Wu. “He was hitting the ball harder than me, which I am not used to. I’m really happy to get through.”
The 21-year-old Spaniard won against Chinese Juncheng Shang (6-2, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Yibing Wu defeated Indian Sumit Nagal (6-3, 6-3) and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 25 seed (6-2, 6-1).
