Ruud reaches last eight at Indian Wells for first time, beats Monfils
Casper Ruud edged out Gael Monfils 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 on Wednesday evening and will play the winner of the match between Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi and American Tommy Paul, the No 17 seed, in the next round
Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 9 seed, edged out Frenchman Gael Monfils 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 to reach the last 8 of the Indian Wells Masters at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Wednesday.
Ruud, ranked No 9, will face the winner of the match between Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi and American Tommy Paul, the No 17 seed, next.
The last Scandinavian man to reach the Indian Wells quarter-final was Robin Soderling in 2010.
Ruud is also now 15-2 versus Frenchmen since the start of 2021, losing only to Ugo Humbert at Wimbledon in 2022 and Arthur Fils in last year’s Hamburg quarter-final.
The Norwegian won against Slovak qualifier Lukas Klein (6-4, 7-6 (4)) and Fils (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Monfils, ranked No 54, beat Australian Max Purcell (6-1, 6-2), Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 8 seed (6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2) and No 28 seed Cameron Norrie (6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-3).
