Ruud edges Munar in Dallas, reaches 24th career final
Casper Ruud edged out Jaume Munar 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) on Saturday evening. He’ll play the winner of the match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov and American Tommy Paul, the No 3 seed, for the title
Norwegian Casper Ruud, the second seed, edged out Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) to move into the final of the Dallas Open at the Ford Center at The Star on Saturday evening.
It was a tense battle until the end, with Munar serving for the match at 5-4 in the final set, but unable to close the door on the fifth-ranked Norwegian.
“Second and third sets, he really stepped it up,” Ruud said after the two hour and 29-minute clash. “I was kind of in control in the first set, I started really well, just the way you want to.
“Then he just kind of fired up… he really, really took control. It was tough for me, I had some break points, there were some really close games in the third. Him serving for it at 5-4, I know what the feeling is like, you can get tight, you want to finish, you see the finish line a few yards in front of you and you kind of stumble – I’ve done it myself and I was kind of fortunate to be on the right side of it today.”
Ruud reaches his 24th career final, wihch is sixth among players born since 1990. The 26-year-old has now reached a total of seven finals on hard court, and he will bid for his second ATP hard court title on Sunday in Dallas.
