Rotterdam Open: Nightmare start of the season continues for Medvedev
Mattia Bellucci defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 on Wednesday evening and will play the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the next round
Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci reached the last 8 of the Rotterdam Open by winning against Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 at the Rotterdam Ahoy on Wednesday evening.
Daniil Medvedev hasn’t won two consecutive matches on the ATP Tour in 2025. He’s 0-2 vs Top 150 players in 2025! Not good enough for a player of his calibre, who is off to his worst start since 2020… The former world n°1 is in crisis.
The Russian ended the match against Mattia Bellucci with only 1/12 on break points. He saved a match point in the second set tie-break but wasn’t able to win his third match of the season. It’s Bellucci’s first win against a Top 10 player, and first quarter-final in ATP 500 tournament.
“The idea was to have fun and to be myself on the court today” said the Italian player after his win. I went a lot with serve and volley, it’s sometimes a good tool against him.”
Bellucci, ranked No 92, will face the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor next.
In the previous round of the Rotterdam tournament, the Italian defeated Dutch wildcard Mees Rottgering (6-3, 6-2).
Medvedev, ranked No 7, beat Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka (6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-1) in the previous round of the Rotterdam tournament.
