Brouwer advances to quarter-finals, as Holger Rune retires with injury
Gijs Brouwer benefited from the abandonment of Holger Rune (6-4, 4-0) on Thursday evening and will face Dutch wildcard Tallon Griekspoor in the next round
The quarter-finals at the ABN Amro Open in Rotterdam will be a decidedly Dutch affair. Two Dutchmen will meet for a spot in the semis after wild card Gijs Brouwer advanced to the last eight when Holger Rune retired with a wrist injury trailing 6-4, 4-0 on Thursday evening.
Brouwer, aged 26 and ranked No 160, is into his first career ATP hard court quarter-final, and second overall, after notching his first career top 10 win.
The Dutchman will face Dutch wildcard Tallon Griekspoor in an all-Dutch quarter-final on Friday.
Rune was in complete control early on, and didn’t give much hint that he was suffering, but he would soon drop four consecutive games as Brouwer pushed through to take a one set lead, 6-4.
The Dutchmen that kept his foot on the accelerator, breaking Rune twice to open a 4-0 lead in the second set before the Dane retired.
Rune saw the trainer during the changeover with the score 3-0 in the second set, and had his right wrist examined and taped during an ensuing medical timeout.
The 19-year-old then lost a five-deuce game, which extended Brouwer’s run to eight consecutive games, and walked to the net to shake hands with the world No 160 after he was broken for 4-0.
Gijs Brouwer beat Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler (6-3, 7-5) in the previous round of the Rotterdam tournament.
In the previous round of the Rotterdam tournament, the 19-year-old Dane won against French qualifier Constant Lestienne (6-4, 6-4).
