Rome Masters: Zverev advances to quarter-finals, faces Fritz next
The German won against Nuno Borges 6-2, 7-5 in the fourth round on Tuesday
German Alexander Zverev, the No 3 seed, defeated Portuguese Nuno Borges 6-2, 7-5 to move into the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters at the Foro Italico in Roma on Tuesday afternoon.
Zverev, ranked No 5 in the world, will face American Taylor Fritz, the No 11 seed, next. This will be the eighth career meeting between the players (Zverev leading the head-to-head 4-3) but the first on clay.
The German beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic (6-0, 6-4) and Italian Luciano Darderi (7-6 (3), 6-2) ahead of his victory.
This is the 28th time that Zverev has reached the quarter-finals at an ATP Masters 100 event, putting him joint 10th on the all-time list along with American Michael Chang.
Earlier in the tournament, Borges, ranked No 53, defeated Spaniard Pedro Martinez (6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (8)), Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 15 seed (6-4, 6-4) and Italian qualifier Francesco Passaro (4-6, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (4)).
