Two days after shocking world No 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets, Chilean Alejandro Tabilo continued his giant-killing run against Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 16 seed, to move into his first career ATP Masters 1000 series quarter-final at the 2024 Rome Masters.

The 29th seed saved two set points in the second set tiebreaker before finally converting his fifth matchpoint to win 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10) in two hours and 34 minutes.

The win extends Tabilo’s winning streak to seven matches as he won the Aix-en-Provence ATP Challenger earlier in the month. It also ensures that he will break into the top 30 for the first time next week, currently sitting at No 28 in the live rankings.

The Chilean, ranked No 32 in the world, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Zhizhen Zhang and Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro next.

Before his win over Djokovic, the 26-year-old Chilean had defeated German Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 7-6 (4)) in the first round.

Khachanov, ranked No 18, won against Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (6-4, 6-4) and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 20 seed (6-2, 6-4) earlier in the week.
