Rome Masters: Paul reaches last eight, defending champion Medvedev latest to fall

American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, moved into the last eight of the Rome Masters by beating Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, 6-1, 6-4 at the Foro Italico in Rome on Tuesday evening.
This is Paul’s first win over Medvedev in four previous meetings, and his first win on clay against an opponent ranked in the Top 20.
Paul, ranked No 16, will face Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed, next.
The American won against Russian Aslan Karatsev (6-4, 6-2) and German Dominik Koepfer (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Italian Open.
Earlier in the tournament, Medvedev, ranked No 4, won against Jack Draper (7-5, 6-4) and edged out Serb qualifier Hamad Medjedovic (7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5).
He has still never defended a title in his career.
