Rome Masters: Monteiro holds off Monfils to reach second round
Thiago Monteiro defeated Gael Monfils 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday and will face No 32 seed Jordan Thompson in the next round

Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro reached the second round of the Rome Masters by beating Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-2, 7-5 at the Foro Italico in Roma on Wednesday afternoon.
Monteiro, ranked No 106, will play No 32 seed Jordan Thompson next.
