Rome Masters: Khachanov through to last 16
Karen Khachanov defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-2, 6-4 on Sunday. He’ll play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 29 seed, in the next round
Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 16 seed, moved into the fourth round of the Rome Masters by winning against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 20 seed, 6-2, 6-4 at the Foro Italico on Sunday.
The Russian improves to 7-2 in the clay Masters 1000 series events this year. It is also his fifth win in as many meetings over Cerundolo, the third at a Masters series event in 2024. Interestingly all of his five wins over Cerundolo have come at ATP Masters Series events.
Khachanov, ranked No 18, will face the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 29 seed, next.
In the previous round of the tournament, the Russian defeated Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (6-4, 6-4).
Cerundolo, ranked No 22, won against Italian wildcard Matteo Gigante (6-1, 6-3) in the second round of the Italian Open.
