Rome Masters: Jarry advances to last four, knocks out Tsitsipas
Nicolas Jarry edged out Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday evening and will play American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, in the next round
Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 21 seed, advanced to the last 4 of the Rome Masters by edging out Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the Foro Italico in Roma on Thursday.
It is his first Masters 1000 semi-final and he looks set to return to the ATP Top 20.
Jarry joins Alejandro Tabilo in the final four, marking the first time multiple men from Chile are in the semi-finals of a tour event since 2006 (Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu in Vina del Mar).
Tsitsipas’s loss means his record this year on clay is now 13-3, and he fails to join Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as the only men to reach three consecutive Rome semi-finals since the turn of the millennium.
Jarry, ranked No 24, will play American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the Chilean won against Italian Matteo Arnaldi (6-2, 7-6 (6)), Italian wildcard Stefano Napolitano (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) and French qualifier Alexandre Muller (7-5, 6-3).
Tsitsipas, ranked No 8, defeated German Jan-Lennard Struff (6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4), No 27 seed Cameron Norrie (6-2, 7-6 (1)) and Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 9 seed (6-1, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
