Rome Masters: De Minaur outlasts Auger-Aliassime to move into fourth round
The Australian will face the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, and No 27 seed Cameron Norrie in the next round
Australian Alex de Minaur, the No 9 seed, edged out Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 18 seed, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round of the Rome Masters at the Foro Italico on Monday.
Auger-Aliassime came back from a break down early in the third set to level the decider at 3-3 but de Minaur held on to a second break of serve to close out the three-hour marathon encounter.
This was the Australian’s 25th win of the season and his first over Auger-Aliassime in three career meetings.
De Minaur, ranked No 11, will play the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, and No 27 seed Cameron Norrie next.
In the previous round of the tournament, the Australian beat Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-3, 6-2).
Auger-Aliassime, ranked No 20, won against Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp (6-1, 7-6 (6)) earlier in the week.
