Rome Masters: Cerundolo beats Sinner, will face Ruud in quarter-finals
Francisco Cerundolo won against Jannik Sinner 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday and will play Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 4 seed, in the next round
Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 24 seed, beat Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 8 seed, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 to reach the last eight of the Rome Masters at the Foro Italico on Tuesday.
Cerundolo, ranked No 31, will play Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 4 seed, next.
Cerundolo’s only previous win over the Italian came when Sinner had to retire due to blisters in Miami last year.
Earlier in the tournament, the Argentinian won against Chinese Yibing Wu (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Frenchman Gregoire Barrere (6-7, 6-2, 6-2).
Sinner, ranked No 8, defeated Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis (6-1, 6-4) and Russian lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko (6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Italian Open.
