Shanghai Masters: Tsitsipas beats Nishikori in second round for 200th hardcourt win

Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 10 seed, reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters by winning against Japanese wildcard Kei Nishikori 7-6 (6), 6-4 at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Friday.

Tsitsipas and Nishikori played a tight first set, nearly touching the one-hour mark, as they failed to break each other’s serves.

The second set followed a similar pattern until the Greek converted a break point in the seventh game. Nishikori showed resilience by saving three match points on serve in the ninth game but Tsitsipas eventually prevailed to register his 200th win on hardcourts.

With the win, the seed No 10 also avenged his Canadian Open loss to the Japanese.

Tsitsipas, ranked No 12, will face Frenchman Alexandre Muller next.

In the previous round of the Shanghai tournament, Nishikori, ranked No 153, defeated Argentinian Mariano Navone (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).
