Alert – Sinner beats Djokovic to win Shanghai Masters
Jannik Sinner, the world No 1, defeated the Serb in straight sets in the final on Sunday
Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, beat Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 4 seed, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to win the Shanghai Masters trophy at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Sunday.
Sinner, ranked No 1, defeated Japanese Taro Daniel (6-1, 6-4), Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 31 seed (6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2), American Ben Shelton, the No 14 seed (6-4, 7-6 (1)), Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed (6-1, 6-4) and No 30 seed Tomas Machac (6-4, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Shanghai tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Djokovic, ranked No 4, defeated American Alex Michelsen (7-6 (3), 7-6 (9)), Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 28 seed (6-1, 6-2), Russian Roman Safiullin (6-3, 6-2), Jakub Mensik (6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 7 seed (6-4, 7-6 (6)).
What if an official of a governing body put a banned substance on a rash , and then shook the hand of a top tennis player causing the player to lose reputation and perhaps a year or more of tournament play. The official surely would be the guilty person and should give up all work in sport for 1 to 2 years . He would say that’s not fair , I didn’t know it was a banned substance and I wasn’t banned from using it as I am not a professional athlete.
The only person at fault in the Sinner matter is the Physio and I believe he was fired. You do not shoot a bank customer for being in the bank during a bank robbery. Everyone , in every case , deserves the presumption of innocence. That is the standard one must usually satisfy .
Instead of trying to make Sinner guilty of something which clearly was not of his doing, the system should admit that the rules are unfair or at least unworkable. Apologise to other players / sports people who have suffered bans in doubtful circumstances ,. You don’t make someone guilty by quoting other bad decisions . Yannick is a young gentleman , a credit to his family , to himself and to any professional sport . I can name many people around the world who have been punished for something they did not do . Some spent 20 years in prison only to be later exonerated by evidence which had been available and ignored or missed in error or on purpose . Once a system of justice of any kind convicts someone , even overwhelming evidence is hidden or ignored rather than admitting fault. It is the duty of everyone to get to the truth , and nothing else.
