Shanghai Masters: Paul saves five match points to make last 16

American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, won against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 19 seed, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-2 to advance to the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Sunday.

Paul recovered from a set and 1-5 deficit, notably saving five match points on return in the eighth game of the second set.

The match lasted for two hours, 45 minutes, with Tabilo converting two break points and Paul twice as many. The American registered 13 aces and 39 winners against the loser’s 11 and 34, respectively.

Paul, ranked No 13, will play the winner of the match between No 30 seed Tomas Machac and Australian qualifier Aleksandar Vukic next.

The American defeated Italian Fabio Fognini (6-1, 6-3) in the previous round of the Shanghai tournament.

In the second round of the Shanghai tournament, Tabilo, ranked No 23, won against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (6-3, 6-2).
