Shanghai Masters: Monfils advances to third round

Frenchman Gael Monfils edged out Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 22 seed, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to move into the third round of the Shanghai Masters at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Friday.

Monfils faced stern resistance from Baez, who took the second set with two break points.

Overall, the Frenchman converted four break-point opportunities, smashing 15 aces and 36 winners to complete the win in two hours, 13 minutes.

Monfils, ranked No 46, will face the winner of the match between Arthur Cazaux and No 16 seed Ugo Humbert next.

The 38-year-old Frenchman defeated Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Shanghai tournament.
