Italian Fabio Fognini edged out compatriot Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to reach the second round of the Shanghai Masters at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Fognini, ranked No 80, will face No 11 seed Tommy Paul next.
