World No 1 Alcaraz to miss ATP Finals with abdominal injury, out for six weeks
American Taylor Fritz will take the Spaniard’s place in the eight-man event
World No 1 Carlos Alcaraz will miss this month’s season-ending ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals because of injury.
The Spaniard suffered the injury to the left side of his stomach during his quarter-final defeat by Holger Rune at the Paris Masters on Friday.
In a statement on social media on Saturday, the 19-year-old US Open champion said a scan showed “an internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall” and said he expects to be out of action for around six weeks.
Alcaraz will also miss the Davis Cup Finals and said it was a disappointing way to end such an incredible year.
“It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events, which are so important to me, but all I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery,” he said on Instagram. “Thank you for the support!”
The news means the No 9 in the ATP Race – Taylor Fritz – takes the eighth spot for the event, which begins in Turin on November 13.
