Paris Masters: In-form Rune ends Hurkacz’s hopes of reaching ATP Finals
Holger Rune won against Hubert Hurkacz 7-5, 6-1 on Wednesday evening and will play Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed, in the next round
In-form Dane Holger Rune reached the last 16 of Paris Masters by beating Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 10 seed, 7-5, 6-1 at the Accor Arena on Wednesday evening.
Rune, who broke into the world’s top 20 for the first time on Monday at No 18, will play Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed, next.
The result means Hurkacz cannot qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, leaving Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz fighting it out for the last two spots.
Rune, who has now won 15 of his last 17 matches, saved three match points in the first round in beating Swiss Stan Wawrinka (4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3)).
Hurkacz, ranked No 10, won against French wildcard Adrian Mannarino (7-6 (5), 6-4) in the previous round.
