Paris Masters: De Minaur ends Draper’s run to reach quarter-finals
Alex De Minaur beat Jack Draper 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. He’ll play the winner of the match between Arthur Cazaux and Holger Rune in the next round
Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 9 seed, reached the quarter-finals of Paris Masters by beating Jack Draper 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 at the Accor Arena.
Draper was on a seven-match winning streak, having won his maiden 500-level title in Vienna last week before two impressive wins in the French capital.
But his run has been ended by the tenacious Australian, who also ends Draper’s slim hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin next month.
Draper will rise to yet another career-high of 14th in the world rankings after winning two matches at the indoor tournament in Paris, but he ultimately ran out of steam after the first set after a gruelling couple of weeks as De Minaur’s quality and experience shone through.
De Minaur, ranked No 10, will play the winner of the match between French lucky loser Arthur Cazaux and Dane Holger Rune, the No 13 seed, next.
The Australian won against Argentinian Mariano Navone (7-5, 6-1) and Serb lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic (6-4, 7-6 (5)) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Draper, ranked No 15, won against Jiri Lehecka (7-5, 6-2) and edged out American Taylor Fritz, the No 5 seed (7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-4).
