Novak Djokovic‘s first singles match since the US Open will be against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary after the former junior Wimbledon champion edged out Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Rolex Paris Masters on Monday.
World No 40 Fucsovics missed a match point in the second set and came from a break down in the third to claim his place in round two.
Djokovic returns to the Tour for the first time since he narrowly missed out on completing the calendar-year Grand Slam when he was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in the final.
The Serb, who is looking to finish the year ranked No 1 for what would be a record-breaking seventh time, has won all three of his matches with Fucsovics, the most recent of those coming at Wimbledon, when he won their quarter-final in straight sets on his way to the title.
And the worrying news for Fucsovics is that Djokovic looked sharp on Monday as he partnered another Serb, Filip Krajinovic, to beat Aussies Luke Saville and Alex de Minaur 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the first round.
