Musetti looking forward to “beautiful” rematch against Djokovic
Time for a rematch in Monte-Carlo as Lorenzo Musetti confirmed his round of 16 clash with Novak Djokovic
Lorenzo Musetti was the man who put an end to Novak Djokovic’s Monte-Carlo campaign in 2023, beating him 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 16.
Now they’ll have a rematch at the same stage in 2024 – and the Italian is anticipating it with relish.
“It’s kind of fun, because it’s exactly one year, because it’s same tournament, same round, and same spot,” he told reporters following his 6-3, 7-5 win over Arthur Fils.
“So hopefully will be a nice match, but of course, as I said before, would be a lesson, for sure, in both ways. If I lose or if I win, doesn’t really matter, because, you know, playing against a champion like Nole, there is always something to learn and to, you know, to take.
“So really looking forward now to, you know, have one day off, and then enjoy the beautiful match upcoming with Nole.”
Djokovic: Musetti is one of the most talented players on clay
For his part, Djokovic paid Musetti some great compliments earlier in the day, before he knew who he would be facing in the round of 16.
“I’m not scared of anything and anybody, but I really hope that I can get the chance to play him again, get the match-up, another match-up here.
“He obviously is, you know, one of the most talented players on clay, a beautiful one-handed backhand. He’s very athletic. He can do a lot of great things. He’s one of the most promising young players not only from Italy but generally for the world.”
