Rio Open: Zapata Miralles reaches first ATP 500 semi; plays Norrie next
The Spaniard defeated countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in Friday’s quarter-finals
Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles edged out No 7 seed and fellow countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Rio Open at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
This is the first ATP 500 semi-final for Zapata Miralles in his career. Ahead of Friday’s victory, Bernabe Zapata Miralles won against Jaume Munar (6-3, 7-5) and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 4 seed (6-1, 4-6, 6-1).
Ramos-Vinolas, ranked No 47, edged out Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) and defeated Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan (6-2, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Brazilian Open.
Zapata Miralles, ranked No 63, will face second seed Cameron Norrie next. This will be the first meeting between the two players.
