Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas moved into the second round of the Rio Open by defeating French qualifier Hugo Gaston 7-5, 6-4 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday evening.
Varillas, ranked No 81, will play the winner of the match between Brazilian wildcard Thomaz Bellucci and Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 6 seed, next.
