Wildcard Thiago Monteiro defeated qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves 7-5, 6-3 to reach the last eight of the Rio Open at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.
Monteiro, ranked No 117, will play No 5 seed Sebastian Baez next.
In the previous round of the Rio tournament, Thiago Monteiro benefited from the abandonment of Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed (1-1).
Meligeni Alves, ranked No 153, won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) in the previous round of the Rio tournament.
