Spaniard Pedro Martinez defeated Chilean Cristian Garin 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Rio Open at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Monday evening.
Martinez, ranked No 76, will play the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 3 seed, and Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry next.
