Rio Open: Fonseca becomes first player born in 2006 or later to win ATP Match with win over Fils
Joao Fonseca defeated Arthur Fils 6-0, 6-4 on Wednesday and will face Chilean Cristian Garin in the next round
Brazilian wildcard Joao Fonseca advanced to the second round of the Rio Open by beating Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 7 seed, 6-0, 6-4 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.
With this, the 17-year-old became the first player born in 2006 or later to win an ATP Tour main draw match.
It also marked his first win over a top 50 player. The Brazilian won the 2023 US Open boys title and ended the season as junior world No 1.
Joao Fonseca will play Chilean Cristian Garin next.
