Rio Open: Qualifier Jarry upsets Baez to set up Alcaraz showdown
Nicolas Jarry upset the No 6 seed Sebastian Baez 6-3, 7-6 (3) in Friday’s quarter-finals
Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry advanced to the semi-finals of the Rio Open by beating Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 6 seed, 6-3, 7-6 (3) at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Friday evening.
This is Jarry’s first ATP semi-final since the Bastad Open in 2019. The Chilean, ranked No 139, will face Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed and defending champion, next.
Earlier in the tournament, Jarry had scored wins over Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 3 seed (6-4, 6-1) and Spaniard Pedro Martinez (6-2, 6-2).
Baez, ranked No 35, had defeated Brazilian wildcard Thomaz Bellucci (6-3, 6-2) and Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas (7-5, 7-6 (6)) in the previous rounds of the Brazilian Open.
