Comesana outlasts Jarry in three tiebreaks, advances to Rio Open quarter-finals
Francisco Comesana won his second marathon of the week in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, upsetting Nicolas Jarry in three tight sets. Comesana will face top seed Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals.
Argentinian Francisco Comesana edged out Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 6 seed, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (6) to advance to the quarter-finals of the Rio Open at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday evening.
The 24-year-old reached his first ATP 500 quarter-final, saving a match point in the final-set tiebreak before closing the door on the world No 47 in three hours and 14 minutes. Jarry had a good look on a backhand return on his match-point chance at 6-5 in the tiebreak but it found the top of the net.
“I thought I lost,” he said on court after the win over the two-time Rio semi-finalist (2018 and 2023). “I am still thinking that I lost, but now I’ve won. I don’t know what to say.”
Comesana needed a total of six hours and 35 minutes to get through his first two rounds.
“I knew I had to serve very good, because he has such good shots, serve, return, forehand, backhand – he does everything so good,” Comesana said. “I’m learning every match.”
Comesana, ranked No 86, will play No 1 seed Alexander Zverev on Friday. The German is looking forward to the showdown.
“For sure I will do some homework,” Zverev said of Comesana. “He’s a young and up-and-coming player. He’s very good; especially on this surface I think he can do a lot of damage. I’m looking forward to our first meeting.”
In the previous round of the Rio tournament, the Argentine beat Brazilian wild card Gustavo Heide (7-6 (2), 6-7 (7), 6-3). Jarry, ranked No 47, beat Argentine qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.
