Qatar Open: Monfils advances to last eight, defeats Zhang

French wildcard Gael Monfils reached the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open by edging out Chinese Zhizhen Zhang 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Wednesday evening.

Monfils, ranked No 68, will face Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 3 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the 37-year-old Frenchman won against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-1, 7-6 (9)).

Zhang, ranked No 48, defeated Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 7 seed (6-2, 6-0) in the previous round of the Doha tournament.
