Auger-Aliassime tops Davidovich Fokina to set semi with Medvedev in Doha
Felix Auger-Aliassime won against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 7-6 (5) on Thursday evening and will face Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, in the next round
Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the second seed, won against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 7 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to reach the last 4 of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Thursday evening.
The Canadian improves to 3-0 lifetime against Davidovich Fokina, and 7-3 on the season, as he reaches his 24th career ATP semi-final.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked No 9, will face Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, next.
Medvedev knocked out the Canadian en route to winning his 16th career title last week, claiming a 6-2 6-4 triumph to improve to 5-0 lifetime against Auger-Aliassime. That sparkling head-to-head includes a comeback from two sets down at the 2022 Australian Open, won by Medvedev 6-7(4), 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
Medvedev rides a seven-match winning streak into tomorrow’s tilt.
Andy Murray will square off with Jiri Lehecka in Friday’s other semi-final at Doha.
The 22-year-old Canadian edged out Australian Jason Kubler (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 31, defeated Frenchman Constant Lestienne (6-4, 6-3) and SoonWoo Kwon (6-3, 6-2).
