Portuguese Open: First back-to-back wins for Thiem this year, advances to quarter-finals
Dominic Thiem beat Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday and will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 4 seed, and Frenchman Quentin Halys in the next round
Austrian Dominic Thiem beat American Ben Shelton, the No 8 seed, 6-2, 6-2 to move into the last eight of the Portuguese Open at Clube de Ténis do Estoril on Thursday.
Thiem, ranked No 111, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 4 seed, and Frenchman Quentin Halys next.
This is the first time he has won back-to-back matches in seven months.
Ahead of his victory, the Austrian edged out qualifier Sebastian Ofner (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
Shelton, ranked No 39, won against Frenchman Constant Lestienne (7-5, 7-5) in the previous round of the Estoril Open.
