Paris Masters: Thiem makes it three in a row with win over Wawrinka
Dominic Thiem edged out Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Monday night and will play No 6 seed Holger Rune in the next round
Dominic Thiem has edged Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a a thriller to move into the second round of Paris Masters at the Accor Arena on Monday night.
It was a late-night epic between these two veterans of the ATP Tour, with the match finishing well after 2am local time in Paris. The win sees Thiem, who came through qualifying, win his third match in a row here in Paris. After the former Grand Slam winner has struggled for consistency in recent years, winning such a tight clash will be a huge boost for the Austrian’s confidence.
Both men had tough nights on serve, but it was Thiem who proved more clutch defending break point, saving 10/13 while Wawrinka could only manage 1/5 in response. The Swiss player will be kicking himself, as he had match point but was unable to capitalise on the opportunity.
Thiem, ranked No 108, will play No 6 seed Holger Rune next.
