After winning his 22nd Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros, Rafael Nadal stated that rival Novak Djokovic, who owns 20 Majors, is in the best position to end up with most Grand Slam titles by the end of their respective careers.

The three-way race between Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer (who also owns 20 Slams) has fascinated and enthralled tennis fans and experts over the past few years. While the Spaniard now leads by two, many believe that Djokovic is best placed to end up with most Slams given his physical fitness and the injury issues facing Nadal and Federer, who plans to return to the tour at the Laver Cup in September, after more than a year on the sidelines.

In the latest episode of Match Points, talking alongside former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and fellow journalist Carole Bouchard, tennis writer and broadcaster Ben Rothenberg gave his assessment of what Nadal actually meant when he said in Paris that Djokovic is the favourite in the race.

“He is taking the pressure off himself and adding more pressure to Novak, saying, “Novak, if you don’t pass me, you’re screwing it up. Good luck!!”,” Rothenberg said.

“But it’s still very hard to win two or three more Grand Slams when you are already 35 years old. At some point for all of these players, the well will run dry. We have seen it happen relatively suddenly for a lot of top players. Like Serena Williams. Who would have thought the 2017 Australian Open would be her last Grand Slam. And it looks right now that it will almost certainly be her last Grand Slam title. You never know when you are going to hit the wall.,” Rothenberg said.
