ATP Bastad: Borges through to first final, faces Nadal for title

The world No 51 won against Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-finals on Saturday

Portugal’s Nuno Borges, the No 7 seed, moved into the final of the Nordea Open by winning against Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-4 at the Båstads tennisstadion in Bastad on Saturday.

Borges, ranked No 51, will play Spain’s Rafael Nadal for the title. This is the first ATP Tour-level final for the Portuguese player in his career.

In the previous rounds of the Swedish Open, the Portuguese defeated Italian lucky loser Andrea Pellegrino (6-2, 7-6 (3)), Henrique Rocha (1-6, 6-4, 6-0) and Kazakh qualifier Timofey Skatov (6-4, 6-3).

Tirante, ranked No 121, beat Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria (3-6, 6-1, 6-4), Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed (7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4) and Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) earlier in the tournament.
