“Myself, Pospisil, Djokovic… we wanted to do something for future of tennis” – Kyrgios on PTPA lawsuit
Nick Kyrgios suggests the legal action against ATP, WTA, ITF and ITIA was long-awaited
Nick Kyrgios suggested on Wednesday that he put his hand up to become one of the plaintiffs in PTPA’s lawsuit against the ATP, WTA, ITF and ITIA hoping for a better tomorrow.
PTPA, founded by Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil in 2019, filed cases in the US, UK and EU against the tennis’ top organising bodies, calling out the entire system in charge of the racquet sport in a 163-page complaint.
Speaking to Sky Sports in Miami after his first-round win, Kyrgios suggested the action was long-awaited.
“This has been… I felt like, people knew that something was going on behind the scenes for a long time,” the Aussie said. “And I think that, you know, myself, Pospisil, Djokovic… we all wanted to do something like this for the future of tennis.
“The players, myself and many other players are unhappy with the structure and everything that’s going on in tennis at the moment. There’s over a 100-page doctrine that people can read for more information about it, I don’t want to go into all the details. I’ve been as involved as I can be with everything I’ve got going but this will be a special moment in tennis for sure. Things needed to change so I think it’s a big day for tennis.”
The PTPA litigation seeks jury trial against ATP, WTA, ITF and ITIA for “unsustainable” schedule, “restrictions” on prize money, “random” drug tests and other flaws in the system.
ATP has so much power and they don’t have to show anything to anyone and this where things willl change.”

Further, Kyrgios rued the lack of transparency, absence of a true players’ association in tennis and insufficient player earnings.
“We’re the only sport in the world that doesn’t have a players association so that was the PTPA’s first goal, to get players to be heard. We don’t get heard… for instance, we’re using different balls pretty much every week…. things that shouldn’t be happening at absolute high professional sport at the top level.
“ATP just has so much power and they don’t have to show anything to anyone and now this where things willl change. They’ll need to show things and how things operate and that’s when people will really realise that it hasn’t really been done correctly over the last how many years.
“I don’t think players ultimately have been very happy with what they earn on the tour, comparatively to other sports. And I think that’s definitely one of the main reasons also.”
