Sinner pulls out of Madrid quarter-final with hip injury
Sinner struggled with a hip injury during his last two wins at Madrid, and has elected to pull out from Thursday’s quarter-final due to the lingering issue.
Jannik Sinner will forgo his first ever Madrid Open quarter-final due to a lingering hip issue that has bothered him this week in Madrid. The top-seeded Italian has pulled out of the tournament, sending Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime through to the semi-finals via walkover.
The 22-year-old announced the news via the tournament’s website on Wednesday.
The world No 2 exhibited signs of discomfort in his win over Pavel Kotov in the third round, and again on Tuesday as he battled past No 16-seeded Karen Khachanov in three sets.
Looking for solutions
After his win over Kotov, Sinner said:
“I have been struggling a little bit with my right hip. We’re trying to find a solution and I don’t think it’s anything serious. Sometimes I feel it more like today and some days are a little bit better.
“I have a good team behind me and we’ll try to get my body going for tomorrow and we’ll decide tomorrow what’s best for me and what’s best for the body.”
Tests and recovery
Sinner took to X himself to post his thoughts on the issue, saying:
“Very sad to have to withdraw from my next match here in Madrid. My hip has been bothering me this week and has slowly been getting more painful. Taking the advice from the doctors we decided it’s best to not play further and make it worse.
“I’ll be doing some more tests in the coming days and follow the advice from the specialists on recovery.”
The 22-year-old is 28-2 on the season overall, and he owns three titles in 2024, including his maiden major title at this year’s Australian Open.
