Defending champion Alcaraz and in-form Rune in same half of draw at Madrid Masters
Alcaraz won Madrid 12 months ago, beating Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev in the process
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, two men who won titles on Sunday, could clash in the semi-finals of the Masters Masters.
The draw for the second clay-court Masters 1000 of the year saw Alcaraz, the No 1 seed in the absence of the injured Novak Djokovic, given a bye in round one, as were all of the top 16 seeds.
The Spaniard, who won his third title of the year in Barcelona on Sunday, will face either Emil Ruusuvuori or Ugo Humbert in round two, while his first seeded opponent is scheduled to be Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.
Seb Korda, returning from injury, could be waiting in the fourth round while fifth seed Andrey Rublev would be his quarter-final opponent, if the seedings go to plan, with Rune, the winner in Munich on Sunday, or third seed Casper Ruud a potential semi-final opponent.
Rafael Nadal and Djokovic are missing from the event through injury, while Jannik Sinner pulled out because of illness.
Alcaraz won the title in Madrid last year, beating Nadal, Djokovic and Alexander Zverev in the process.
