Murray faces race to be fit for Wimbledon as ab injury forces him to pull out of Queen’s
Murray is back in the top 50 for the first time since his return from hip surgery. But the Brit now faces a challenge to regain full fitness ahead of Wimbledon
Just when things were beginning to look up for Andy Murray, the former world No 1 faces another setback. One day after reaching the final in Stuttgart and injuring himself in the deciding set, Murray has been forced to pull out of this week’s Queen’s Club Championships in London.
In a statement released, the three-time Major winner said, “After having a scan this afternoon, an abdominal injury means I won’t be fit to compete at Queen’s this year. The tournament means a lot to me, and it’s disappointing not to compete, especially after playing some good matches on the grass already.”
Tournament Director Luiz Carvalho expressed disappointment on the news but hoped to see Murray back next year, “Obviously it’s extremely sad that Andy won’t be able to play here this year. Everyone at the cinch Championships wishes him a speedy recovery. We look forward to welcoming him back next year.”
The 35-year-old is up to No 47 in the latest rankings after going down to top seed Matteo Berrettini – the first time since he returned to the tour after his hip surgery that he is ranked among the world’s top 50.
Wimbledon, which Murray won in 2013 and 2016, begins in London on June 27.
