Kyrgios continues blazing form, defeating world No 1 Medvedev in Montreal
Nick Kyrgios defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday evening and will play Alex De Minaur in the next round
Unrelenting Australian Nick Kyrgios continues to be one of the biggest revelations of the 2022 tennis season. This year’s Wimbledon finalist has been one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour this season, and he continued that impressive form on Wednesday in Montreal, where he beat Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 to move into the last 16.
“This is the fourth meeting we’ve had,” said Kyrgios, who is 3-1 lifetime against the Russian. “I’ve had some success against him in the past and he’s beaten me before so I feel like we know each other’s games well. I’m not the type of player that goes into this match looking at rankings or anything like that – it’s just who I’m playing and what kind of ball they are giving me.”
Kyrgios struck 34 winners against 25 unforced errors as he rallied from a set down to earn his second career win over a No 1-ranked player. He is 26-40 lifetime against the top-10, and 13-25 against the top-5 overall.
“I know today I had a very clean objective of how I was going to play, a lot of serve and volley, a lot of aggressive play from the back,” Kyrgios, who won 27 of 43 net points, said. “I executed better than he did on the day, that’s all it comes down to. He won the first set and I feel like I had opportunities there as well – hopefully I can just keep this rolling.”
Kyrgios improves to 29-7 on the season with his triumph. He is 7-7 lifetime in Canada.
“I feel confident in my body and my mentality going into the US Open, but at the same time, there’s so much time between then and now.”

Confident and taking nothing for granted
The world No 37 extended his current winning streak to eight matches – he has won 13 of 14 since the start of Wimbledon, and says he is not thinking about the US Open at all. It is one match at a time as he tries to keep his confidence high and his body healthy in North America.
“I feel confident in my body and my mentality going into the US Open, but at the same time, there’s so much time between then and now,” Kyrgios said. “I have to focus on this event, then Cincinnati, there’s so much I look forward to, I’m not going to think about the US Open right now.”
Kyrgios will play Australian Alex De Minaur next.
The Australian won against Argentinian Sebastian Baez (6-4, 6-4) and Grigor Dimitrov (7-6(4), 7-5) to reach the round of 16 at the National Bank Open in Montreal.
